L/O - To research the Radio Industry

What does the term Public Service Broadcast mean?

television and radio programmes that are broadcast to provide information, advice, or entertainment to the public without trying to make a profit: The channel is trying to reduce its obligations to produce public service broadcasting such as religious programmes.

Who Funds It?

It is entirely commercially funded, and the vast majority of its income comes from TV and online advertising. 6 Channel 4 is a publisher/broadcaster which means it commissions content from external production companies rather than producing its own programmes.

BBC Radio and Audiences:

L/O - To explore the BBC Radio and
audience behind the live lounge

Public service broadcasting refers to broadcasting for public benefit rather then serving commercial interests.

1) 10 Radio stations,

2) 50

3) The license fee

4) Commercial - cable/satellite

5) BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, Heart, BBC Radio 1, Capital FM

6)  Radio, Phone, Speaker, Computer.

BBC Radio One:

- Radio One - 15-29
- Radio Two - 35+
- Radio Four - 54

- The BBC demonstrates that a single broadcaster can have a range of brand identities that target different audiences.

- Young presenter
s - Aimed at young people because young presenters = young viewers

- Mainly young people listen to these songs. Young people are big fans of pop music so to get younger listeners they make pop music to get young people.

- More pop songs to appeal to young people

Political debated wether radio one should be covered by the licence fee as political decision makers do not believe that music is important.

L/O - To explore the BBC Radio contextual issues and the audience behind the Live Lounge

  • Entertain young listeners
  • 15 - 29 year olds
  • Artist emerging (new)
  • Live music
  • Young Adults

The bright colours represent the uplifting happiness of the show! The fact that the background is very colourful represents that all the presenters must be very happy. The presenters are all smiling too which means they must all be happy to be on the show. Their clothing does not appeal to the audience as they are dressed in black. I think that their clothing should match the backgrounds and match the shows energy. The number one in the foreground stands for the number of the radio station.

Evidence:

Political context:

Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct technologies and media forms due to digitisation and computer networking.

BBC Radio 1: The Live Lounge can be accessed via the commercial platform of Vevo.

What advantage is there for (1) the BBC (2) Vevo (3) or the audience?

More people get access to it

Live Lounge appeal and format

L/o - To explore the format of the show and its appeals.

What are the benefits of broadcasting on 2 different radio stations at the same time?

Being hosted by Radio 1 and 1Xtra allows artists to be broadcast across two of the radio platforms - either to a more niche audience or enabling a wider audience for a band.

The live lounge is also the name of a room in the Radio 1 studios.

Artists are filmed in an intimate radio studio, acoustically often with little production rehearsal. Normally they'll perform 1 or 2 of their own songs and then a unique cover from an A list Radio 1 Artist.

Uses & Gratifications:

Personal identity -
Information
Entertainment
Social interaction

Personal Identity - Relate to the presenters who are a similar age, interests in music. Identify with the artist.

Information - Background information about the artist, up and coming events.

Entertainment - Enjoy the live music

Social Interaction - People can discuss the performance afterwards.

Convergence:

1) I can access the iplayer, bitesize, news, sport and more

2) Only the artists for the next day mentioned as they change all the time.

Live performance is regarded as more culturally significant than simply playing records. It is also more expensive.

Stormzy:

3 days preparation - Wages for the people involved in performance and production.

6 professional singers - employed as backing singers - introduced to the song and have to learn the words, how to perform it and the melody.

Musical director - make a recorded song, translate to live performance. Added instruments, singers. Works with best business.

The live lounge appeals to the audience through the type of music they play. They play mainly pop music which this generation is a big fan of. The target audience is 15-29 year olds so pop music is a pretty good way to catch the attention of the target audience.

L/O - To understand exam style questions and practice exam technique.

16/1- 1. You need to ensure that you give specific examples from the Live Lounge you listened that show how that particular show appealed to the audience. E.g songs played, conversation or words used. 2. You need to make sure you follow the structure to respond to the question that covers: the audience appeal, the example from the Live lounge, explain how it appeals to the audience, how it meets the remit.

They played lots of songs that appeal to the young audience.

The Live Lounge targets a young audience very well with their 3 main presenters. Their presenters are quite young and use informal speech

Question 1:

BBC owns radio 1.

Question 1:

a.
b.
c.

They first of all have young presenters who use informal language.
They also play new music which is likely to be popular with the
teenagers today.
b. The music radio stations meet the requirements very well for the
public service broadcasting system mainly because

because BBC radio contains popular music and movies etc. Where as
commercial radio contains only music and no other things for
entertainment

Wheatus - Teenage dirtbag:

1. A song by American rock band Wheatus

5.  is about a childhood experience that guitarist and vocalist Brendan B. Brown had

7. Jason Biggs & Mena Suvari featured in the video.

LYRICS:

Her name is Noel
I have a dream about her
She rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirt bag, baby
Yeah I'm just a teenage dirt bag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Her boyfriend's a dick
He brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick my ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an I-Roc
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Oh yeah, dirt bag
No she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh yeah, dirt bag
No she doesn't know what she's missin'

Man I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely, lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me this must be fake
My lip starts to shake

How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?

"I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you ooh"

Ooh yeah, dirt bag
No she doesn't know what she's missin'
Ooh yeah, dirt bag
No she doesn't know what she's missin'

The song sk8er boi is about a boy who has a crush on this girl. However she does not like him because he is a rock star and she is a snob. However later on the boy is a star and the girl is nothing. I think the purpose of it was to get rid of stereotypes as the singer is a female and she's a skater. She could be classed as a rebel or a punk at the end as she smashes her guitar on the car at the end.

The song teenage dirtbag was written about an experience that Brendan B Brown experienced 'There was a murder in my town when I was 10 and it turned out to be
teenagers who were doing enormous amounts of drugs, lots of PCP and
acid, anything they could get their hands on.' Brown quoted, he said
that the song was made after that experience of 'teenage dirtbag'

Two main types of music video

1. Performance
2. Narrative

Wednesday 8th February 2023

Mise-En-Scene

L/O - To examine the use of media language
in music videos.
The set music videos are a mixture of styles -
Wheatus - Narrative and Performance and Arvil
Lavigne - Performance plus some narrative.

Narrative:

Teenage Dirtbag - About a girl who is a teenage dirtbag and this 'loser' boy has a crush on her. He dreams that she likes him and then wakes up.

Sk8er Boi - The girl and her bandmates set up an illegal band in the street and the police come in the end to arrest them.

Taylor Swift is bathing in money and expensive jewellery, making her look very rich. She looks incredibly wealthy in this shot. There has also been jewellery that has been dropped on the floor, showing that she probably doesn't care about it.

Sk8er Boi -

Setting:
This setting looks like it could be in a garage or an indoor car park. The fact that the people are jumping on it and not caring shows it could be their car, or they don't care and its someone else's car.
Performance:
She is singing into the microphone and looking directly at us which shows us that this music video is a performance type of video.
Costume, Hair & Makeup:

Her hair and makeup shows us that she is a punk as she has messy eyeliner and dyed hair

Teenage Dirtbag:

Costume Hair & Makeup:
She looks very pretty and challenges the stereotypes of the
popular guys girlfriend who usually wears pink and is a
cheerleader etc.

Setting:
Its obvious that they are all teenagers in a school and this
particular setting looks like they are in a gymnasium, we can
justify this by the basketball hoops above the band.
Lighting and colour:

The instruments look very bland and colourless a swell as the
clothes people are wearing most people are wearing dark blues
however the main singer is wearing a blue shirt which is
very bright.

DIRT

Q1: Identify the word that describes a large company which owns a set of companies that produced different media forms
A - Conglomerate

Q1 - Bauer Media owns radio stations as well as magazines. Identify the word that describes adding other areas of business in this way

A - Diversification

Q1 - Identify ONE source of funding for BBC Radio One

A - TV License

Model answer:

Two marks would be given for the opening sentence, which explains how
radio stations Target audiences. Two marks would be given for the
following sentences, which exemplify different use of targeting in
Radio 1 Live Lounge.

Target Q3 - Make points about how BBC Radio provide wider content on
their radio stations, give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to
do this linked to the remit

BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for
several reasons. Firstly Radio 1 provides a platform for smaller,
less popular artists. This example is due to the remit and in
particular because they are expected to promote and make a platform
for those who do not already have one. We can identify this in the
live lounge through all their music which is made, sang or performed

by small artists

L/O - To explore how camera work is used to create meaning in music videos.

1 The camera shot is a long shot.

2 The shot is used to show that the artist is the leader as she is in the front centre. I think she could be singing about cars or having fun as children as riding on bikes and cars seems quite childish?

3 Her clothing is all red to match her car which is likely done on purpose.

1 I think it looks like a desert and it looks hot theres nobody there and no trees water or people

2 The artist could be singing about being alone and isolated

3 The camera shot could link to her being alone as we can't see any people around her whereas in the close up we could only see her face and we couldn't tell if there were people around her, but with the long shot we can definitely see there are no people.

Sk8er boi is expressionistic and Teenage Dirtbag is naturalistic.

Shot typ2
Shot type -
Why used?
Why used here?

3
Shot type - long shot
Why used? To show the scenery and the people in the middle
Why used here? To show the person in the middle all alone.

Shot type - High angle
Why used? To show the girl being the star of the show
Why used here? So we can see the girl and what she's standing on and some of the people around her, shows that she's powerful.

5
Shot type - Low angle
Why used? To show the dominance the boys have and the way their portrayed as the popular boys, it mkaes him look stronger and bigger
Why used here? Comparing the 2 boys in the back don't look as good as the one in the front it shows that the boy in the front is more popular and they take up the whole corridor.

6
Shot type - Canted angle
Why used? Shows that she's in the spotlight and everyone wants to see her, the close up cantered angle is quite unusual but adds to her expressionistic style
Why used here? So we can see her features and the microphone she's holding.

There are lots of shots to show how expressionistic it is.

Sk8er boi Adjectives:

The camera work is chaotic, fast and energized.

Teenage Dirtbag Adjectives:

The camera work is, natural, calm and chill.

PEE Chain: Sk8er Boi

P - The camera movement in Sk8er Boi is expressionistic.

E - For example at one point in the video it dramatically changes from a high shot to a Cantered angle close up.

E - The expressionistic camera work fits the tone of the song because of how energetic it is and chaotic.

PEE Chain: Teenage Dirtbag

P - The camera movement in Teenage dirtbag is Naturalistic.

E - For example at one point in the video it is a long shot viewing him sat at a bench all alone with the word 'loser' written on the billboard.

E - The Naturalistic camerawork fits the tone of the song because of how calm and relaxed it is.

10 Mark Question:

In Sk8er Boi they use many different camera angles to construct the idea of an artist in this case the artist is Avril Lavigne. In this music video it is a mixture of many camera angles being used all at once. For example when she is stood on top of the car with the microphone in her hand there is a high shot capturing her image with lots of people jumping up to her in excitement. This promotes her identity and makes people notice her.

Wednesday 22nd March 2023

L/O - To explore how sound & editing are used to create meaning in music videos.

Sound is categorised into 2 sections which are; Diegetic & Non Diegetic.

Diegetic sounds are those from inside the world of text (that the characters can hear.)

Non Diegetic sounds are sounds outside the world of film that the characters cannot hear.

Sound:

Teenage dirtbag:

The only diegetic sound we hear is the car crashing into the bike and the bike falling over. The reason they have done that is to connect the narrative to the song.

Sk8er Boi: Diegetic Sound -

  • Spray cans
  • Rope jingling
  • Traffic/cars
  • Police sirens
  • Helicopter
  • Smashing glass
It adds realism and helps set the scene in the city before we even see anything.

Anti-Establishment

Editing:

What does editing include?

  • Order of shots/shot choices
  • Continuity
  • Transitions
  • Shot durations
  • Pace and rythm
  • Special Effects

Both videos use continuous editing

Sk8er boi has a faster beat and more cuts.
Teenage dirtbag has much longer shots to focus on the narrative.

Teenage Dirtbag:

  • Warped transition - shows its a dream
  • The girl is often put in slow motion
  • The mirror ball at the end shows the end of the dream

Media language uses different special effects to emphasise what the music video is about such as, Sk8er Boi and Teenage Dirtbag have many differences in terms of special effects. Sk8er Boi uses not a lot whereas Teenage Dirtbag does. Sk8er Boi has a very fast pace and a lot of cuts used to express their expressionistic camerawork. Teenage Dirtbag uses a lot of special effects such as the warped transition at the very beginning certifying its a dream.

L/O - To explore how representations are covered in music videos.

Traditional Gender stereotypes - Female:

Weak
Not smart
Likes the colour pink
Long hair
Lots of makeup
Housework
Likes cooking

Traditional Gender Stereotypes - Male:

Strong
Smart
Likes the colour blue
Short hair
Normal work
Likes sports

Objectification -

The action of degrading someone to the state of a mere object.

Sexual objectification -

Sexual objectification is when a male/female views another male/female primarily as an object of sexual desire, rather than as a person. Physical appearance/attractiveness is focused on.

How have the following been represented in the video: Ska8er Boi:

Avril Lavigne - A rebel, naughty
Punk Rock Genre - smashing guitars, being rebels
Teenagers - Very rebellious
Urban setting - A city setting with cans, graffiti
Gender -
Ethnicity - Mainly white people in the crowd even though USA has many people of different ethnicity's
Sexuality -

How have the following been represented in the video: Teenage Dirtbag:

The band - They play their instruments with fruit adding surrealism
Ethnicity - Predominantly white
High school -
Teenage stereotypes - The low angle shot of the 'jocks' shows dominance and popularity.
Gender - The boy is a 'loser' which challenges typical stereotypes he also seems quite shy/nervous as he does not confront the girl after her boyfriend hits his bike with his car.
Sexuality - Mainly heterosexual.

Wednesday 26th April 2023

L/O - To explore and practice exam style question's.

4 mark question - Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos. Refer to two music videos you have studied in your answer.

In Sk8er Boi women are represented a lot more differently rather than in Teenage Dirtbag. Avril Lavigne challenges stereotypes of women with her clothing style. She wears baggy clothes and does not show off any of her feminine features, unlike the girl in teenage dirtbag. The connotations of her dressing unlike a girl is stereotyped too suggest's that she is a tomboy and does not like the female style.

In teenage dirtbag women are represented differently than compared to Sk8er Boi. The main female supports women's stereotypes and wears feminine clothing like dresses and heels. She does show off her feminine features showing that she supports the female stereotypes. The connotations of her wearing girly clothing prove that she supports the female stereotypes and does not challenge them like Avril Lavigne does.

10 mark question - Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos. Refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recognisable and so help the audience understand the current narrative.

For example, in Sk8er Boi, they use a stereotypical representation of males as active, rule-breakers and interested in girls. This is shown through them often skating, biking and driving, often in places they shouldn't be. (Like on the roof-tops) and filming the pretty girl in the car. This fits in with the teenage stereotypes also used.

Another example in Sk8er boi is the stereotypes of teenagers in general at the beginning of the music video we see spray cans which could link to rebelling because of the wall art behind the image of spray cans. This fits with general teenage stereotypes as most tend to be rebellious and break rules.

An example of teenage dirtbag stereotypes are the feminine side. The main female is a stereotype of a typical female. She tends to wear girly clothing and has long hair that tends to be tied back in a
ponytail
