L/O - To explore the concept of representations and stereotypes
What is meant by the term representation?
- The media offers the audience an interpretation of the world.
- It is a RE representation of the events people and place.
- A stereotype is a generalised representation of a person,place or thing. They are limited and often offensive or used for comedy.
Stereotyping:
- Nanny - Woman, Kind, Gentle
- Nurse - Female,
- Teenager - Loud, Obnoxious, Annoying
- Astronaut - Brave, Smart, Adventurous
- Football player - Brave, Strong, Male, Sporty
- Opera Fan - Loud,
- Teacher - Smart, Well Dressed, Male
- Tattoo Lover - Male,
How are people represented?
Student - The year 9 girls are being represented as, disruptive, loud, obnoxious.
Teachers - Represented as an entertainer, enthusiastic, energised, stressed
How do people act?
Students - Rude and swearing a lot
Teachers - Kind but also shouty
What do they say?
The students will sometimes swear at each other
What surprises me?
How the students will swear at the teachers!
How are stereotypes reinforced?
The male English teacher stereotypes the girls are loud and rude.
